High-Speed Thrills Return to New Orleans: Powerboat Grand Prix Comes to Lake Pontchartrain

Get ready for an adrenaline-pumping weekend as the roar of high-speed powerboats returns to New Orleans waters for the first time in nearly two decades. Powerboat P1, the premier international marine motorsport promoter, is bringing its inaugural Offshore Grand Prix to the Metairie lakefront this summer, marking a thrilling new chapter for Louisiana's motorsports scene.

A Historic Return to Lake Pontchartrain

After a nearly 20-year hiatus, powerboat racing is making its triumphant return to Lake Pontchartrain on June 27-29, 2025. This exciting event is part of Powerboat P1's new Triple Crown series and promises to deliver world-class marine motorsport action right in our backyard.

For longtime New Orleans residents, this return brings back memories of the exciting racing era that defined the 1980s, '90s, and early 2000s, when powerboat races were held annually on the lake. During those glory days, New Orleans was even home to a racing team owned by the late Al Copeland Sr., founder of Popeyes Fried Chicken, adding local flavor to the international racing circuit.

What to Expect: A Weekend Festival

Jefferson Parish Councilman Hans Liljeberg emphasizes that this isn't just a race – it's "a big festival the entire weekend." The event will feature:

  • Friday Night Pit Party: Get up close with the racing teams, boats, and drivers

  • Multiple Race Categories: Different classes of powerboats competing throughout the weekend

  • Various Racing Events: Action-packed competitions spanning all three days

The festivities will take place at the Bonnabel Boat Launch, providing spectators with excellent viewing opportunities right from the lakefront.

Speed That Will Take Your Breath Away

Just how fast do these boats go? Prepare to be amazed:

  • Smaller Racing Boats: Reach speeds of approximately 100 mph

  • Super Cats: The fastest category can exceed an incredible 200 mph

Imagine watching these powerful machines slice through Lake Pontchartrain's waters at speeds that rival Formula 1 race cars – it's a spectacle that demands to be witnessed in person.

New Orleans Powerboat P1 Grand Prix Race Course

The event is the season opener for the P1 Offshore Triple Crown race series held in various cities across the United States, featuring four days of high-energy fun and excitement.  The weekend includes a boat poker run, kilo run speed trials, a parade of boats, and a party in the pits featuring vendors, great local food, live entertainment, and an opportunity to see power boats up close and meet the race teams. High-speed racing occurs on Saturday and Sunday (June 28-29).

Perfect Spectator Experience

One of the best aspects of this event is its accessibility. According to organizers, spectators will be able to "sit right there on that levee with a nice comfy chair like Jazz Fest and watch them and just hear them roar." The comparison to Jazz Fest isn't just about seating comfort – it speaks to the festival atmosphere and community gathering that this event promises to create.

Best of all, admission is completely free to the public, making this world-class motorsport event accessible to everyone who wants to experience the excitement.

Convenient Transportation and Parking

Recognizing that a major event requires substantial logistics, organizers have planned comprehensive transportation solutions:

  • Multiple Parking Locations:

    • Marie Riviere Elementary School

    • Grace King High School

    • 3500 Causeway Boulevard

  • Free Shuttle Service: Jefferson Parish will provide shuttles from all parking locations to the event site

  • Ample Parking: Organizers promise sufficient parking capacity for race fans

Economic Impact and Community Benefits

The return of powerboat racing represents more than just entertainment – it's expected to provide significant economic benefits to the greater New Orleans area. Local hotels, restaurants, and small businesses are anticipated to see increased activity throughout the weekend as racing fans and participants visit the region. This economic boost comes at a perfect time, showcasing New Orleans' ability to host world-class sporting events while supporting our local business community. The event's return is thanks to Harvey Gulf Marine CEO Shane Guidry, who invested $300,000 to bring the race back to Jefferson Parish.
